The idea of creating a website can seem overwhelming and even confusing. That’s why I’ve decided to make it as easy as possible for you by breaking down each step to get you started. I want you to get your website dream from your brain to the world as fast as possible.

By following these simple steps to create a website, you will be able to get your website out into the world and begin the crazy journey of owning your very own slice of the internet.

I offer training and guidance for anyone who wants to create a website themselves. I also offer website design packages if you want to get a flexible and easy-to-use website created for you.

So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get started!

Step 1. Choose & register your domain name

Before getting started on creating a website you have to decide on what your URL (domain name) will be. This will be the ‘www.’ destination all your website users will travel too, to see your content.

This can be the name of your business, your name, the main topic you base your service/product around, basically any words that you would like people to associate to what you are trying to accomplish.

For example; my business is called Busy Made Simple. So, the URL’s I registered for my website were www.busymadesimple.com.au and www.busymadesimple.com.

I recommend going to NetOrigin and searching for different domain names to see if they are available to be registered.

From NetOrigin you can then register the domain name or names you decide you would like to own. Registering a domain name is not expensive and can cost you as little as $12.99 per year.

Step 2. Choose & register with a hosting service

Ok, now that you have your domain name, it’s time to find a hosting service to host your website.

A great hosting service, that I personally use and recommend to all of my clients is, again, NetOrigin. They are Australian hosted, very affordable, offer great customer service and have a 99.9% up-time guarantee.

If you would like to look around for another hosting service, here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. They should offer good reliability (i.e. 99.9% up-time) and fast servers
  2. You should be able to access the hosting service from something called a ‘C-Panel’. This is where you access the back end of your website.
  3. They should be able to offer you 24/7 support and reliable customer support.
  4. The hosting service should support WordPress (most do)
  5. Finally, make sure they are proving you with lots of storage space

Step 3. Connect the domain name to your hosting account

Please note: This step only needs to be completed if you didn’t purchase your domain name and your hosting account through the same company.

To connect the domain name with your hosting account, you will need to find (or ask) for your name servers (or DNS records) from your hosting account and input these records into your domain name account.

If you get lost, you should be able to contact the company you purchased the domain name from and they can assist you through the process.

Step 4. Install WordPress from the c-panel

WordPress is one of the best software platforms available to create a website. There are many different platform options available but I highly recommend WordPress as the:

  • are free
  • provide regular updates and support
  • have the flexibility to grow with your website as it changes over time
  • integrates well with many other systems
  • are SEO friendly
  • are responsive to mobiles and tablets
  • offer many different options for themes (explained in the next step)

Most hosting services offer a one-click install for WordPress through the c-panel dashboard which makes the process very easy.

Step 5. Choose & install your theme

There are so many options for choosing a theme for your website. There are free and paid versions available to you. The theme is what allows you to choose the look and feel of how the website will be designed.

Many free themes out there offer you the ability to input your media and text into the layout they design for you. Free themes are available through the WordPress login area. While most paid/premium themes allow you to change the look and design of the website to give the website more of a personalised touch. Premium themes can be purchased from an external business who create and sell them.

I highly recommend using the Divi theme from Elegant Themes. Divi is so flexible, giving you the opportunity to create a website any way you want, but at the same time, is so easy to learn and use. If you ever get lost on how to do anything, you can find so many video tutorials for Divi through your Divi account and on the internet.

To install the Divi theme you can just follow the instructions through this how-to-guide.

Step 6. Configure the website & add your content

Woohoo! Your website is up and running!

You’ve chosen your theme and now you need to configure the settings within the theme to start setting up the formatting and feel of the website.

Configuring your website includes:

  • Setting up the navigation bar
  • Adding in your logo
  • Choosing colours (most likely your branding colours)
  • Organising the basic layout and design of your website
  • Installing plugins to give your website the functionality it needs

After you have configured the website all you need to do now is start adding in your content.

How exciting and congratulations on making it this far!

Your website will always we a work-in-progress with the platform, theme and plugins needing to be updated from time to time. You will also want to update your content and refine the website as you learn more, but this is the fun of creating a website. Enjoy!
